WARNING: This newsletter is going to be a bit different than my normal tech tips, but it’s something that I think needs to be addressed.
Entrepreneurship is an absolute rollercoaster.
One minute we’re riding a great wave, and the next minute, the wind is taken right out of our sails.
The waves are great, and that’s what keeps us going. But when we’re feeling defeated, it’s hard to keep going.
We usually see the highlight reels on social media. We share wins, celebrate successes, and motivate others to keep going. And that’s great. I love that.
But what we don’t see enough entrepreneurs talking about is HOW to get our mindset back on track.
If we’re being real, I’ve been in a funk lately and working my way out of it. Now that I’m starting to make some progress, I want to share some tips that have helped me.
Here are four things that have helped me shift my mindset:
Give yourself a minute to be sad/pissed off/frustrated/etc.
Entrepreneurship is HARD. Pushing those feelings to the side will only make them worse in the long run. Emotions are normal. We’re all human. It’s okay to disconnect and take a day to process how you’re feeling.
Talk it out.
Find someone you trust (a mentor, teammate, or spouse) and talk through it. Talking about your situation out loud gets those thoughts out of your head to make space for fresh ideas. The person you’re chatting with might even have advice you never considered.
Create an action plan for the next three months.
Now that you’ve processed your feelings, it’s time to get back to work. Sitting down in the dumps isn’t going to help anyone. Include at least four tangible steps that you can take to get your business back on track.
PRO TIP Here are some examples: I will revamp the verbiage on my website to make it more SEO friendly by the end of next week. I will spend 20 minutes each weekday engaging on LinkedIn. I will analyze my social media metrics every Monday to see what’s working and what’s not.
Follow through.
Now that you have the plan hold yourself accountable. Set up milestones in your PM system, or create calendar events. Tell a teammate what you’re doing so they can check in on your progress. Consistency is key here.
Maybe you don’t need these tips today, but you might need them one day. Save this email for then. (And if you know someone who’s struggling, feel free to use that forward button to spread the word and help them out.)
I’ll be chatting about this LIVE in my Facebook group at Noon CT today. Please join me to listen and maybe even share your wisdom with our group.
