You wear a lot of hats as a business owner.
Finding the balance between what you need to handle versus what someone—or something—else can do is essential.
Knowing what to automate and what to delegate can save time and sanity.
Plus, the right combination of automation and delegation can give your business the push it needs to reach new heights.
It took me a long time to find the right combination of automation and delegation in my own business, so I’m going to break down what I learned to save you from that trial and error.
Here are 4 things to consider:
Understand the Task's Nature
Repetitive Tasks? Automate. If the task is predictable and repetitive, it’s probably perfect for automation.
Human Judgement Needed? Delegate. If a task needs creativity, decision-making, or nuance, it’s likely a job for a human.
Evaluate Cost Efficiency
Automate When Volume is High. When tasks become labor-intensive at scale, automation becomes the cost-effective solution.
Delegate When Flexibility is Key. Sometimes you need adaptability more than speed. In these cases, delegating makes more sense.
Look at the Value It Brings You
Automate for Accuracy. When a process requires precision, automation can eliminate human error and keep things consistent.
Delegate for Creativity and Growth. Sometimes business growth needs fresh ideas, empathy, and a personal touch. That’s when you delegate.
Time vs. Impact Assessment
Automate Low-Impact, Low-Complexity Tasks. Ask yourself: does this task drain my time without moving the needle significantly? If so, it’s a prime candidate for automation.
Delegate Tasks Outside Your Zone of Genius. Delegating anything outside of your core strengths lets you put more energy into the areas where you have the biggest impact.
And if you find the task doesn’t fit into either of these, consider eliminating it all together. Run through your daily and weekly tasks to see what fits into these categories!
