If you’re getting this email, you already know how much I love automation.
Seriously, I could talk about automation in my sleep. (I probably do talk about automation in my sleep…)
But, even as an automation expert, there’s one thing I’m always keeping in mind:
Over-automating is a real thing.
Automating to make your life easier is a beautiful thing. Automating so many things that your life is harder is not.
If the automation bug has bitten you, it’s important to keep this in mind. It’s easy to want to automate everything, but there are a few things to keep in mind as you take your automation level from 0 to 100.
Here are 3 signs you might need to scale back your automation efforts:
You’re spending more time running the automation than you would doing the actual task.
Automation should ALWAYS save you time. If it’s not saving time, then it’s not worth it. You’re better off just doing the tasks manually.
You’re spending more money than the time you’re saving.
When it comes to investing in tools, you should always be saving money in the long run. If a tool costs you $30/month, but you’re only spending 10 minutes/week doing the task, the automation might not be worth it.
You have so many automation tools in place that sh*t keeps breaking.
The key to successful automating is to pick 1-2 of your favorite platforms, then make sure all future platforms work with it. The less programs involved, the less chance you have of broken automation.
